For their analysis, Larison and her colleagues used advanced genetic sequencing techniques to closely study differences between not only inbred zebras, but also the zebra populations in distinct locations. The more immediate concern, she says, is the plains zebra’s genetic health. Within their family groups, however, zebras don’t much seem to mind who’s striped and who’s spotted, notes Larison, whose latest research suggests zebra stripes help the animals avoid biting flies. It’s possible odd stripes could make the zebras more obvious to predators for instance, most recorded instances of polka-dotted zebras are as foals, not adults. “Even though plains zebras aren’t highly threatened, these genetic issues often show up before really problematic things start happening,” she says.Ī foal with pseudomelanism, a rare genetic mutation in which animals display some sort of abnormality in their stripe pattern, drinks from a water hole in Namibia's Etosha National Park in November 2011. While the study only looked at seven animals with odd patterns, the results could be a visual warning about the plains zebra’s future, says Larison. But the study also revealed these isolated groups were more likely to produce abnormally striped zebras, suggesting these genetic mutations are caused by their poor genetic diversity. Their study, published recently in the journal Molecular Ecology, found that smaller, more isolated populations of zebras had lower genetic diversity-not a surprise. To find out, Larison and colleagues ran genetic analyses on 140 individual plains zebras-including seven animals with unusual coat patterns-from nine locations in Africa, including Nambia’s Etosha National Park and South Africa’s Kruger National Park. ( Read more about Larison’s research in her own words.) “The observation led me to wonder: Is part of the reason that I’m seeing so many is because this population is inbred?” says Larison, who studies the evolution of zebra stripes at the University of California, Los Angeles. A lack of gene flow can lead to inbreeding and ultimately infertility, disease, and other genetic defects. Migrating infuses populations with new genes, making it key to a species’ long-term survival. Habitat fragmentation caused by fences, roads, and human development have squeezed zebra populations, like the one in Lake Mburu, into small pockets of land, preventing some of the animals from migrating between herds. Though plains zebras are the least threatened of the three species, their numbers have dropped by 25 percent since 2002, with around 500,000 animals ranging from Ethiopia to South Africa. So biologist Brenda Larison found it striking that an unusually high number-an estimated 5 percent-of plains zebra living near Uganda’s Lake Mburo were abnormally striped. Such aberrations-often caused by genetic mutations that alter the production of melanin, a natural pigment-are generally rare among mammals. In 2019 in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, scientists recorded a polka-dotted foal, with white spots covering its dark-brown body. But in some cases, these African equines sport unusual color patterns, such as large, black splotches or golden coats with light-colored stripes. Anyone can tell you that zebras have distinctive black and white stripes. Almost always, a first interaction with him was negative. Tekashi would avoid incarceration, but that evening, at a dinner celebrating the judge’s decision, a gun battle would break out between Shotti’s crew and his label CEO Elliot Grainge’s security team. But just more than 12 months after that video shoot in Brooklyn, Hernandez would be in a jail cell facing 32 years to life on charges that included armed robbery and attempted murder.Ħ9 Problems: In a Manhattan courtroom on October 26th, 2018, for a plea violation. People who knew Hernandez well agree that, before he met Shotti, he hadn’t been involved in gang life at all. Later, authorities allege, he would threaten Tekashi’s life. He produced the crowd of menacing young men in the video, and in time would become Tekashi’s unofficial manager. Shotti was allegedly a member of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, a subset of the violent prison gang founded at New York’s Rikers Island jail in 1993. “Shotti,” that would be the most consequential part of that summer day in Brooklyn. But it was his introduction to Kifano Jordan, a.k.a. That surge in popularity would lead to the uncovering of Hernandez’s pre-fame life, including a guilty plea for child-sex charges, a case that would define Hernandez in the public eye. “Gummo,” powered by the bizarre, unforgettable 6ix9ine image, was a viral sensation that went platinum in just a few months. He became hip-hop’s troll prince, a master at sparking outrage and bottling it into a feverish popularity. In his brief career, Tekashi 6ix9ine captured America’s attention with an escalating series of provocations and controversies. Consistency in frequency response between channels is good, and the weak point of cramming 8 tracks onto ¼” tape is that channel separation is less than decks that put 8 tracks onto ½” tape. The frequency of most Fostex machines are pretty similar, flat to 20Khz with the heads being in good shape, with a typical 3-4db boost around 50-100Hz for that nice ‘tape’ sound. Still, many demos and albums were made on Fostex decks, and you may just have an album in your collection made solely on Fostex equipment. Throw in a couple of lemon models (detailed below), and you may end up with a deck that needs a ton of repairs before it’s serviceable. The downside of the Fostex units is that the design and build quality wasn’t as good as Teac or Otari, so 40 years later, the machines, especially the high hour units, don’t fare as well on the used market. The decks worked well, and sounded decent, with a good frequency response. Generally speaking, they were priced less than Otari and Teac models, so a ton of their decks were sold into the home and semi pro recording studio market. The Tascam however runs at 7 ½ IPS only, so a tape made on a Fostex cannot be played on a Tascam 388 and vice versa. The only other company making an 8 track ¼” machine was Tascam, when they released their 388, combination multitrack and mixer unit. Fostex A2įostex was the first and only company that made numerous 1/4” 8 track machines that used 7” tape, for a tiny, portable multitrack reel to reel that ran at 15 IPS. Fostex only marketed to the recording studios, and generally speaking, Fostex wasn’t sold for home stereo use (although several of their ½ track mastering decks are used as such today). Fostex was a relative latecomer to the semi pro and home recording industry, bringing out their first tape deck, the A2, in 1981. “That she can be with both parents makes me very happy,” she added. In my opinion, this actually makes it unbalanced, as the paddle is head-heavy. This balanced weight distribution tech moves the center of gravity to the point of contact on the blade. Unlike the Jet 800, however, it uses Stiga’s WRB technology. Like the Killerspin Jet 800, it is a 7-ply paddle, meaning it is faster and a little heavier than most so you may need some time to get used to it. One thing that sets this paddle apart from many of the others on this list is the carbon in the blade. Such players will instead want a slower blade with a thinner sponge. This may not be the right racket for you if you’re a defensive player. However, it is not so good if you want control. It is an excellent choice for aggressive players who smash and use a lot of spin. The STIGA Pro Carbon is a heavy bat with superior quality for high-level play.
